Most people celebrate St. Patrick's Day by wearing green and eating corned beef and cabbage. But why do we honor St. Patrick at all? Who was he and why was he important to us?

St. Patrick lived over 1,500 years ago, and contrary to popular belief, he was from England, not Ireland. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold into slavery.

"I was sixteen years old and knew not the true God; but in that strange land the Lord opened my unbelieving eyes, and, altogether late, I called my sins to mind, and was converted with my whole heart to the Lord my God, who regarded my low estate, had pity on my youth and ignorant, and consoled me as a father consoles his children." -Thompson and Hicks, World History and cultures in Christian Perspective.

After six long years, Patrick escaped and returned home. But he began having dreams of teaching the children of Ireland about God. He felt called back to Ireland the place of his enslavement and preach the gospel to the people there.

Although other English missionaries had attempted to convert the people of Ireland, they had difficulty because of their deep-seated superstitions and belief in magic. But because of the time Patrick had spent there during his imprisonment, he was able to understand the people and reach them.

He used the three-leaf shamrock to explain the Trinity, which is why I've created this freebie to highlight God, Son and Holy Spirit. Through his teachings he led thousands to Christ. In fact, he started at least 300 churches and baptized 130,000 new Christians!

So, this St. Patrick's Day, when we celebrate with the customary food and fun, remember the shamrock and all that, not only St. Patrick did for the people of Ireland, but of what Christ has done for us all.
