If you saw in the last post I shared an easy diy graduation card. If you missed it, check it out here. The card, when completed, measures a square of approximately 4.25 in x 4.25 in. It might be tricky to find an envelope that will fit this non-standard size. But no worries! I’m here to share with you a quick tutorial on how to make your own envelope and even better yet, if you don’t have time to measure it out and make it yourself, I have a free envelope template just the right size to fit a 4.25 in x 4.25 in card.

First find a piece of thick paper to use as an envelope. It’s kind of fun to find something using an out of the ordinary paper. In this tutorial I used scrapbook paper, but you could easily use an old magazine or wall calendar that has a pretty design spread,or a sturdy piece of wrapping paper, even a grocery bag can make a beautiful, earth-friendly envelope. Whatever you decide be sure it is big enough to cut out an envelope. For this card it will need to be at least 8 in x 10 in. If you’re in a hurry, just print and cut out the free template below, place it over your paper to see if it will be large enough.

Once you have your paper selected draw a 4.75 in x 4.75 in square (a little larger is good too as it will allow for a bulkier card). Then draw side tabs that are at least 1 in - 1.5 in wide on both sides of the square. Draw a third tab that is approximately 2 in tall for the top flap. Lastly, draw a bottom flap approximate 3 inches long. Fold in side tabs and fold in bottom flap over the top of the side tabs. Glue in place. Once your card is in the envelope, glue down the top flap. You may need to use a sticker or seal if the glue doesn’t adhere completely. I usually use a return address label here.
