Easter isn't as popular to Americans as Christmas, but to me it's the most important holiday to celebrate as a Christian. It isn't that creating exotic colors to dye the eggs or crafting interactive basket hunt clues are more fun than Christmas tree hunting or wrapping gifts in fancy ribbons and shiny paper; although those are great fun. And it's not that indulging on dark chocolate bunnies is more appealing than savoring juicy slices of Christmas ham with garlic mashed potatoes. It is what Easter represents that means so much more to me.
Giving the Easter holiday preeminent position on my calendar helps me to honor and recognize that Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection are paramount to any other reason to celebrate throughout the year.
Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas time with the advent season leading up to the birth of Jesus. But without Easter, that birth loses its meaning. Without Christ's resurrection from the grave we would still be hopelessly lost in sin and death.
During this lenten season I read something very interesting about the hyssop branch. The Israelites were instructed to dip the branch into lamb's blood and use it to spread onto the sides and tops of the doors of their homes. Then, God "passed over" their homes and freed them from the death that had been promised to those who did not obey. Which, by the way, is why Passover is celebrated. But what struck me as fascinating is that it was also a hyssop branch that the soldier used to give Jesus a drink while on the cross. The hyssop branch was dipped into the sacrifice of the Lamb of God who ultimately gave us freedom from the death that had been promised to those who did not obey. I love it when Old Testament and New Testament scripture ties together so beautifully!
