What's Better than Coffee? Birthday Card Tutorial & FREE Template!

Today, I’m here with another card tutorial. This one is to celebrate the birthday of a special friend who I don’t get to see very often anymore since she moved out of state. We used to spend practically every day together before hubby and kiddos came along. One of the many things that we share in common is a love for coffee and long chats. So this birthday card features just that.

Below are the supplies I used for this project:

· Pencil

· Eraser

· Straightedge

· Scissors

· Exacto knife

· Self-healing mat

· Micron ink pen

· Watercolors: payne’s grey for the steam, burnt umber mixed with a little bit of ivory black for one coffee cup and very intense deep green for the other

· Paint brush

· Water jar

· Paper towel

· Watercolor card

I created this design to show a single coffee cup with the message “what’s better than a cup of coffee?” on the front and opening to the message “a cup of coffee with a friend” with two cups on the inside. This is intended to be a birthday card, but it could be modified for any occasion.

First, sketch the layout for the front of the card in pencil, then add the lettering to the inside. For a quicker option, complete the form for a FREE template!

Once your sketch is to your liking, go over it with micron ink pen, both front and inside (all except the steam outline).

Cut the bottom portion of the cup and inside of the handle with the card closed, so that when it is opened flat, there will be two cups cut out. Then, with an exacto knife, carefully cut out the curls of steam. Be sure to open the card flat and place on a self-healing mat to protect your surface.

With the card closed, lightly trace the steam cut out onto the inside of the card and paint with a watery mix of payne’s grey watercolor. Also, finish the inside details of the cups with a micron ink pen and a straightedge.

Now, onto painting the cups. The front one I chose a dark brown. Feel free to use any color combination that you prefer.

For the inside, I chose a watery teal turquoise color. Again, feel free to use any color combination. I also added a little free-hand design onto the left side cup to bring the colors together. Other options would be to add a poem or a name to that cup.

Overall, I really enjoyed designing this card and it has already been sent off to greet my dear friend for her birthday.
