I thought my kids would have outgrown dressing up for Halloween by now, but they haven’t. They still love wonder and make-believe. I want to stay in this stage of their childhood forever!
So this year, Peanut wants to be a Night Light dragon, which makes for a simple costume for me since I made her Night Light dragon pajamas last Christmas. However, Princess wants to dress as Hermione Granger of Hogwarts fame. This required a little more planning, but it also provided some art inspiration.
Today, I’m going to share how we put together her costume, a FREE printable with a Hogwarts themed design (PLUS a bonus cauldron graphic) and a couple of ways to use the designs to host a Halloween party.
First, we bought a black graduation gown and gold tie from Goodwill.

Then, I knit a scarf in the fashion of Gryffindor colors. Princess added the fringe.

Then, we put together a felt Gryffindor house badge using the tutorial I found on freshlycompleted.blogspot.com.

Finally, I painted the gold tie with burgundy stripes. It's not perfect, but it will be behind the gown and scarf so it won't show enough to notice the mistakes.

End result, a complete Hermione Granger or other Gryffindor student costume while sharing quality crafting time with my favorite Potter fan.

While we were concentrating on all things Hogwarts, I came up with a fun design featuring the Sorting Hat and the epic quote, “I solemnly swear I am up to no good.”

While creating this design it brought to mind the infamous witches during our study of Macbeth last year and I wanted to pay tribute to Shakespeare’s quote, “Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble.”

And now here are a few ways to use these designs:
1. to make greeting cards
2. to frame and use as décor
3. to print and use as coloring pages
4. to make an invitation
5. to wrap candy
If you are interested in options 1-3, I have a post that describes that process here. The free Halloween bundle is at the bottom of the post.

To use the design to wrap candy, just measure the paper required to cover an empty toilet roll and transfer the design to colored paper. Or get a pre-made wrapper template included in the Halloween bundle at the bottom of the post. If you don't have enough empty rolls on hand, printing on cardstock is a great option too. Here's how to put it together: 1. print template or transfer image to color paper. 2. Wrap around toilet roll and secure with glue or double sided tape. 3. Fold in the bottom end to close. 4. Fill with candy (tootsie rolls, smarties, Hershey's kisses). 5. Fold in the top end to close.
