DIY Calligraphy Snowflake Keychain

Writer's picture: Amanda HermansAmanda Hermans

Merry Christmas! I hope you are celebrating the day with family, friends and fun! We are cherishing the season with my in-laws this weekend, followed by my family next week. Lots of travel happening here, but so worth it.

The beginning of winter reminds me of all things cozy and quiet: warm fires and softly falling snow. Snowflakes remind me of the creativity of our Maker. Each one uniquely designed and delicately beautiful, just like each one of us. Making snowflake calligraphy medallions are perfect for adorning envelopes and cards or even decorating your windows using dry erase markers this time of year. The different design possibilities are endless! So today, I'm sharing how to make your own calligraphy snowflakes to make a custom keychain design to carry around your own peaceful snow this season. Below you will find a free template to make snowflakes that will work for any project you have in mind, not just the keychain shown.

Here are the supplies needed:

· black fine liner (I used faber-castell pitt artist pen)

· shrink plastic sheets

· hole punch

· mod podge gloss sealer

· keychain rings

· beads or decorative elements

· string

· oven

· parchment paper

· cookie sheet

Snowflake medallions may look intimidating, but they are really quite simple and fun. I’ve included a free snowflake guideline sheet with the download, ready to print over and over for plenty of practice.

Once you are ready, print the snowflake templates, cut and place under the shrink plastic (rough side up). Tape them together to prevent moving while you trace.

Carefully trace the template lines provided.

Using the faux calligraphy technique, add weight to downstrokes. For further instruction on faux calligraphy, see my post here. Repeat for each stroke of the snowflake.

Cut out the snowflake shapes and place a hole punch at the top of each one.

Preheat your oven to 320 degrees or whatever the shrink plastic instructions state. Place your snowflakes onto a cookie sheet using parchment paper to protect the pan.

Once the oven is preheated, place the pan into the oven for just a few minutes. This is where the magic is so fun to see! Watch carefully as they will shrink fairly quickly once they start. Again, read package directions carefully. Once they are flat, remove them from the oven to cool.

Notice the size difference in these before and after pictures.

After they have cooled completely (approximately 15 minutes), apply mod podge to seal and add shine. Allow to dry.

Attach decorative beads and snowflakes to keychain. And now you’re ready to add your keys!

Be sure to access the free practice sheet and template below! And again, I hope you have a lovely Christmas. I’ll see you in the new year!
