During the holiday season we enjoy giving thanks to those who serve the community. As a homeschooling family and overall reading addicts, our local library provides us with endless resources. So, I went searching online for something cute and simple to make for our beloved librarians.
I came across this pattern for crochet geckos from Lion Brand and fell in love with them. However, after following the pattern, I was a little annoyed that it took making so many attachments to the main body. That’s when I put my creative energy to work and came up with a way to make this cute guy in one single strand of yarn.

Below is the explanation of each step. But, if you would like the free pdf pattern, it’s at the end of the tutorial. If you would prefer to skip the tutorial and just get to the good stuff, click here.
My daughter also made a vid, which is available on her YouTube channel. You can check it out here. While you’re there, be sure to support her channel by subscribing and letting her know if you enjoy her creative endeavors too!

To begin, attach yarn to hook and make 22 chains (ch).
Now we will begin to make the head. Turn the hook to slip stitch (sl st) into the second ch from the hook. Then half double crochet (hdc) into the next ch. Double crochet (dc) in each of the next 2 ch.
Next, in order to form the neck, we will hdc in the next ch, sl st in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next 2 ch.
We’re ready to start the first leg. Ch 10, turn, dc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 2 ch (1st toe). Ch 4, turn, dc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 2 ch (2nd toe). Ch 4, turn, dc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 2 ch (3rd toe). Sl st in rest of chains back to initial dc.
Continue crocheting the body with dc in each of the next 8 ch. Then repeat the steps for leg 1 above to complete leg 2.
Finish the end of the body by continuing dc in each of next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, sl st in final ch. Then, chain 50 for the tail. Turn and 2 sc in 2nd st from hook, 2 sc in each of the next 34 ch, sc in the remaining ch.
Once your back to the body, it’s time to do the other side of the lizard. Sl st in 1st ch of body, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 ch. Then, repeat the steps for leg 1 above to complete leg 3. Continue crocheting the body with dc in each of the next 8 ch.
Then repeat the steps for leg 1 above to complete leg 4. Finish the body and head with dc in each of next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, st st in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc next ch, sl st in final ch.
Finally, tie off and weave in all of the ends.
