Christmas Card Calligraphy and a Free Template

Writer's picture: Amanda HermansAmanda Hermans

Tis the season for sending Christmas card greetings to our loved ones. To help you with that project I’m sharing an elegant calligraphy card design featuring Christmas ornaments. For a free template, scroll to the bottom of the tutorial. Or click here!

Here are the supplies you will need:

· watercolor card stock or pre-made watercolor cards (5x7)

· pencil and eraser (kneadable eraser is helpful too, but completely optional)

· calligraphy nib holder & nib

· ink (I like using metallic gold, but even black will look beautiful)

· light table or bright window (if using the free template)

If you would like to add a family photo to the inside, you will also need a self-healing mat and exacto knife. A 4x6 template is helpful too, which is included in the free download.

Begin by drawing the ornament design freehand or tracing the template onto your watercolor card using a light table or bright window. If you are using pre-made cards, it is best to lie the card open flat while working on your design.

Next, lighten any pencil lines that may be too dark with a kneadable eraser.

Once you are satisfied with your design, begin tracing over your pencil lines with ink using a calligraphy nib. If you are left-handed, start on the right side of your design. If you are right-handed, start on the left so as not to smear the wet ink as you go.

Once your work is completely dry, erase any pencil lines. If you would like to insert a photo, use the free template provided in the download below and cut the corner sections as the template indicates.

I hope the tutorial and templates help ease and beautify your holidays!
