Brighten Your Winter with a Touch of Nature in Your Mail

With the temperatures remaining consistently in the teens and low 20s here, we’re not seeing a whole lot of animals scurrying about. Normally, we see squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies and even ground hogs aplenty on our property. We’ll even see a deer, turkeys or foxes travelling through on their way to and from the river less than a mile from our backyard. I miss seeing our neighborhood friends so I’m pulling out some old drawings to remind me that winter is only for a season and our furry critters will be back soon.

A sketch notebook is a great way to capture all of the beauty nature has to offer all year round. It is part of our homeschool curriculum. In them we document scientific things like weather conditions, phases of the moon, and time of sunrise and sunset. We also collect discoveries from our nature walks and other field adventures. But the main feature of our nature notebooks is drawings and information about animals, plants and the natural world. It’s fun to look back and see the progress each child has made in the information that they glean from their surroundings and how their drawings have developed as their eyes learn to observe the details.

Here are a few sketches that I’ve drawn in my notebook that I have transferred to digital art.

These drawings are available as a set of printable cards at my etsy shop. The set includes 5 lovely printable cards for only $5. Simply print on card stock, cut along outline, and write a message on the interior. Then, it can be folded along the guidelines, addressed on the outside and mailed. It’s a fun way for kids to stay in touch with pen pals or family that live out of the area. Since it is a digital download, print as many copies as often as you like.
